Preparing Your Workspace

  1. Cover Your Surface: Use the paper mat provided in your kit to protect your table or counter. This mat helps catch any paint and makes cleanup a breeze.
  2. Choose a Well-Lit Area: Good lighting is key for seeing details clearly and ensuring even paint coverage. If possible, work near a window or add extra lighting to your workspace.
  3. Gather Extra Supplies: While the kit includes everything needed for the project, it’s helpful to have a small container of water nearby for rinsing brushes, along with paper towels for blotting and quick cleanup.
  4. Set Up Your Tools for Easy Access: Arrange your brushes, paints, stencils, and wood sign on the mat. Having everything within reach will keep your workflow smooth, letting you focus on painting without interruptions.
  5. Ventilate if Possible: If you’re sensitive to paint odors, ensure some airflow in the room. This can help keep the space comfortable, especially during longer painting sessions.

With these tips, you’ll be all set to create your wood sign with ease and enjoyment!

Step-by-Step Guide

  • Dust off the board with a paper towel
  • Wet down your board with a wet paintbrush prior to painting.
  • Paint the background of your board
  • Don’t forget to paint the sides
  • Let this layer dry completely before moving on to the next step. – In a rush, grab a blowdryer.

Prepping the stencil

  • Turn your stencil facedown & with a gift card smooth out the stencil
  • Slowly peel the white backing layer from your 3-part stencil
  • Take care to ensure small stencil pieces remain adhered to the clear film
  • TIP – It’s best to do this face down & pull at an angle, keeping the blue stencil adhered to the clear film.
  • TIP – Take your time & do this slowly to avoid tearing

Placing your Stencil on the Board

  • Place your stencil on your board & position it – Sticky side down
  • Once positioned press your stencil down onto your board using a gift card
  • Get a good seal so paint will not bleed under your stencil
  • Peel off the clear film, leaving only the blue stencil on the board
  • Go over your stencil again to make sure it has a good seal

Painting your Stencil

  • Paint your exposed stencil with the sponge.
  • Dip the sponge into the paint and blot it off.
  • Use an up & down dabbing motion with very little paint. Too much paint will cause bleeding under your stencil.

Removing the stencil

  • Remove your stencil before your paint has a chance to dry completely
  • Pick out the leftover stencil with tweezers or a pointed object (pin).
  • Allow the board to dry completely before attaching any brackets
  • Hanging up to your sign or place on an stand
  • Enjoy your masterpiece

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Following these tips will help you achieve a clean, professional-looking wood sign with crisp lines and a flawless finish!

Stencil Peeling Off the Background Paint
  • Cause: Applying the stencil when the background paint is still wet.
  • Solution: Ensure that the background paint is completely dry before placing the stencil. Using a blow-dryer can speed up drying, but be careful not to overheat any areas. Also, avoid using too much paint on the background, as thicker layers can take longer to dry and increase the risk of peeling.
Paint Bleeding Under the Stencil
  • Cause: Applying too much paint, which creates wet, standing paint that seeps under the stencil.
  • Solution: Use a small amount of paint and dab up and down with a sponge or brush. Light layers help you avoid pooling paint and give you more control, ensuring that the paint stays within the stencil’s edges.
Avoid Blow-Drying the Stencil
  • Cause: Blow-drying the stencil directly can cause it to warp or shrink.
  • Solution: Do not use the blow dryer once you have applied the stencil.
Rushing the Stencil Removal
  • Cause: Removing the stencil too quickly can lead to smudging or pulling up fresh paint.
  • Solution: Allow the painted design to dry slightly before carefully peeling the stencil off. Gently lift the stencil at an angle rather than pulling straight up to avoid smearing.
Uneven Paint Layers on the Background
  • Cause: Applying paint too thickly can result in streaks, ridges, or uneven drying.
  • Solution: Apply thin, even coats of paint on the background, allowing each layer to dry fully before adding another if needed. Thin coats ensure a smooth finish and prevent the stencil from catching on uneven surfaces – causing bleeding.
